Jacob is our son who turned 30 on September 30, 2024. He has Autism and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. We wanted to leave our home to be turned into a group home for Jacob when we are no longer here to care for him. That has been the plan. There are some issues with that plan. The property taxes are high. About $6000. Someone will have to take that on when we are no longer here. We live on two acres. There is a lot of mowing. We have a pool. No group home is going to care for the pool and the upkeep on the property. We are in a rural area. It will be next to impossible to get staff here consistently. We have come to the conclusion that we will have to buy something smaller that is closer to town.
I have been discussing some of the logistics with Jacob's case manager and trying to learn what other parents in our situation have done. We will probably have to leave his house to the state in the event of our death so as not to leave the burden of taxes and upkeep to our other child.
There is much to work out and I hope we have so much more time with Jacob. I have been having two fundraising events per year-- bowling because it is what Jacob and his friends like. I sometimes sell t shirts, crafts, and plants. Right now, we are a 501 c3 PF- Private Foundation. I was hoping to lose the PF status this year and become a public charity. I filled out pages and pages of forms to get to the end and they asked for a large fee. That is just to file the application and no guarantee it will be approved. That will not be happening this year.
I really believe that God has a plan for Jacob. I feel led to do whatever I can do to help with that plan.
